What is front-end? And what does a front-end developer do?

by | Feb 12, 2024 | Blog

Front-end development is a term that often comes up in discussions about web development and design, but what does it really mean? In this blog post, we explore the basics of front-end development, the languages used, and how it differs from back-end development.

Frontend: What the user sees

The front-end, also known as the 'client-side', refers to the part of a website or application that the user interacts with directly. It is everything you see and experience when navigating a website: the layout, the design, the animations, and everything that makes a website visually appealing and useful. The front-end developer's job is to transform web design into a vibrant, interactive experience by using different programming languages and techniques.

Languages & Tools in Frontend Development

The main building blocks of front-end development are HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language ) is the standard markup language used to create and structure content on the web, such as texts, images and links.
  • CSS (Cascading Style Sheets ) determines the visual aspect and layout of a web page. It allows developers to create a uniform style for an entire website, including colors, fonts and layouts.
  • JavaScript is a scripting language used to make web pages interactive. It can be used to add animations, control multimedia, manage forms, and much more.

Beyond these basic techniques, front-end developers often use different frameworks and libraries such as React, Angular or Vue.js to build more complex and dynamic user interfaces.

Frontend vs. Backend

While the frontend focuses on the user interaction side, the backend, or "server-side", is about what happens behind the scenes of a website. Backend developers work with the server, database, and application logic - all the processes that the user doesn't see but that are crucial to the website's functionality. They use programming languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, and PHP, as well as database technologies such as MySQL and MongoDB, to build the backbone of the web application.

The difference between frontend and backend can be likened to an iceberg where the frontend is the peak visible above the water, while the backend is the massive structure below the surface. Both are crucial to the success of the website and require different expertise and techniques.

Executive summary

Front-end development is an exciting and dynamic part of web development that focuses on creating engaging and interactive user experiences. By mastering HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with modern frameworks and libraries, front-end developers can transform static design sketches into living digital products. Although frontend and backend fulfill different functions in web development, they are both critical to creating fully functional, efficient, and user-friendly websites and applications.
